ReBlogs: Finding Time To Write During A Busy Holiday Schedule

(from Huff Post Books)

The busy holiday season is here! In between baking, visiting family and friends, decorating, shopping for gifts, wrapping the gifts, and a million other tasks that make the holidays hectic—how will you ever find time to write?

When your schedule is packed, it’s hard to justify taking the time to write and easier to tell yourself, I’ll just do it tomorrow. But too many “tomorrows” later, you may find yourself in the middle of January with nothing but a pile of blank pages. Here are some smart ways to keep your writing on track amidst all the turkey gobbling and sugarplums dancing.

The Hassle: You feel rushed and stressed when you steal a few minutes to write.

The Holiday Helper: Instead of noting how much (or how little) time you spend writing, keep track of the number of words you write in a day. By removing the pressure of trying to beat the clock, you’ll free yourself to see your productivity in a new way. Also, give yourself a little slack this time of year. If you normally maintain a rigorous writing timetable of an hour a day, every day—maybe, for now, you could consider any amount of writing on any day as a success.

Linda Joyce signed a contract with Doctor’s Dreams Publishing for the inclusion of two of her poems in Katrina Memoirs to be released on July 1st. Additionally, she'll be a presenting a workshop at the Moonlight and Magnolia Conference, then a guest speaker at the Gulf Coast Writers Association, both events are in Octobers. She's presenting a workshop on SMART-R Goals for Results

Word from the Editor:
SWA's workshop in June is special. It's unlike other writing workshops. From the moment
you arrive and check-in at Epworth by the Sea, you're able to relax. There are different types of lodging available. Yes, you may bring your family and make it a vacation. There's plenty for them to do while you're immersing yourself in the workshop. (Your room reservation does include your three daily meals.)

We take our meals together in a lovely dining room overlooking the intracoastal waterway. It's a time to break bread, nourishing our bodies, and at the same time, filling ourselves with community. Meal time is a time of exchanging of ideas, learning about your fellow attendees--you never know what expertise they may have that you'll need for a future story or poem. Networking takes place southern-hospitality style.

Classes are lively. Questions are encouraged. Content will enhance the richness of your writing craft and feed your creativity.

Then, there's Open Mic Night, a fun and engaging event where writers read some of their works--no criticisms allowed. Just fun and encouragement in the form of applause.

And I can't forget the excitement of Awards Night! Everyone waiting with great anticipation to hear the winners of the contests. I've been blessed with several first prize wins, however, I'm equally excited when my friends win.

As the newsletter editor/blog boss and Author Liaison, a new position on the Board of Directors created to highlight the work of authors attending, I work to spread the news about the benefits of SWA. People often refer to a board position as "sitting," yet its far more like conducting an orchestra with all the juggling I'm doing.

I wouldn't volunteer my time to SWA if I they hadn't proven to me they live their mission: Writers helping writers.

Let us show you how invested we are at SWA in helping you. Register now and join us!

Warmest Regards,

Linda Joyce

URGENT!....SPECIAL STORY CALL-OUT!

From the editors at Publishing Syndicate

We need your help!

We are fast-tracking the manuscript for Not Your Mother's Book...On Being a Mom and need a dozen or so more stories to fill some holes. Thus, this special story call-out is being sent to everyone who receives the Wow Principles newsletter. We also post story call-outs regularly on the Publishing Syndicate Facebook page; join, if you haven't already!

Before we explain what is needed, it is important to understand that stories must focus on being a mom. Do not submit anything that focus primarily on your mother or grandmother or your own childhood memories. We need your personal stories as a mom. And please do not send in stories outside of the topic areas listed below.

We are looking for funny, silly, crazy and edgy stories submitted per the guidelines on our PS website. Disregard the past deadline information posted on the NYMB Mom page; we'll be accepting stories until we have enough, so send in immediately! Because galleys are scheduled to be in place by October 1st, the selection process for the last story selection round will be quick.

NOTE: We have enough essays for this book. Our preference--for this book and ALL of our NYMB books--are stories. Keep this in mind for future submissions.

ONE MORE NOTE: If you already submitted a story for the Mom book, but did not receive a Permission Release Agreement for that particular story, this means the story was not selected for publication. Please do not resend the same story. Thank you.

Below are the eight topics for which stories are needed:

Soccer Moms

We want to hear about mishaps getting your kids to practice, embarrassments while cheering your kids on to victory (or comforting them in defeat) and anything else involving the hectic lives of devoted "soccer moms." And it doesn't have to be just soccer-all kind of sports are welcomed.

Mother of the Bride (or Groom) Mishaps

Has your pride and joy tied the knot? We all know the day--and the planning leading up to it--probably wasn't perfect. Did anything funny or unusual happen to you as the mom? Tell us about it.

Working Moms

Moms have to keep a sense of humor when dealing with daycare mishaps and calls from the school principal in the middle of important meetings. Anything funny ever happen to you?

Talking about Dating and the Opposite Sex

We want our teens to enjoy dating, while being careful at the same time. Tell us about your talks, the "oops" and the good and bad experiences you've shared with your teenagers. Please keep in mind that while we like edgy stories and PG-13 language is OK, what makes a story funny is not how many "potty words" you use. Keep it real-the story needs to be funny on its own.

Volunteer Moms

A few brave souls among us offer to drive the kids' carpool or help out at our kids' school or sports and scouts activities. Tell us about school field trip you helped with that went awry, the class treats you made that caused a commotion or any other disastrous (but funny!) story that still makes you wince to remember it.

Spreading the News

Tell us how you found out you were going to be a mom. Was it planned? Unplanned? How did you tell the important people in your life? We'd especially like to read stories from single moms and adoptive moms and any moms who broke the news in a most-unusual and/or funny way!

Self-image Issues

Who better than Mom to help her preteens and teens through self-image issues like late-developing breasts or late-arriving menstrual cycles, acne or in the case of teenage boys, changing voices and the overabundance of, or lack of, facial hair? Unfortunately, us moms don't always get it right. Tell us what happened the first time you realized your preteen or teen needed to start using deodorant--NOW--or when you had to explain the different type of feminine hygiene products to your daughter. Please keep in mind that while PG-13 language is OK, what makes a story funny is not how many "potty words" you use. Keep it real-the story needs to be funny on its own.

New School-Year Angst

All moms go through it...again and again and again. Send us your funny stories about sending your child off to the first day of kindergarten, middle school, high school or college. Show us your angst! What went right or wrong? Or how liberating was it to have the house to yourself again and a very long summer vacation? Remember, submit a story--not an essay.

Again, here's the link to the PS site:

NYMB Submission Guidelines and Titles

There are also other books that need stories, so check them out when you visit. Thanks!

Times, they are a changing....

The Purple Pros newsletter for the Southeastern Writers Association (SWA) first debuted in 1993 as a quarterly print publication.  Twelve years later, the Purple Pros became a monthly e-newsletter and now we're changing it around again.

Welcome to The Purple Pros blog!

The Purple Pros has always had 3 primary purposes:
  1. Promote SWA, its members and the SWA Writers Workshop
  2. Provide SWA members with an opportunity to publish
  3. Help writers develop their skills and grow their career with instructive articles, interviews and useful resources

So let's talk Submission Guidelines!

Our plan is to publish 1-2 articles, news items, columns, stories, poetry and more, 3 times a week.

SWA members may submit stories, poetry, articles, news, photos (stand alone with a caption or up to 3 to be embedded in the submitted piece).  You can even submit a reblog article if you have a permission statement from the original blogger.  Make sure you include your name or pen name on all submissions. All posting will have a byline. A photo of you and 3-sentence bio are always welcome. You only have to send them once and I'll file them for future postings.

There are no deadlines except for special features so submit any time by email to purple@southeasternwriters.org

PLEASE PUT PURPLE PROS in the subject line.
WORD COUNT: 750 words max.
FORMAT: Attach a Word file (.doc or .docx) to an email.  Photos must be .jpg or.jpeg files.   No other files will be accepted.

Special Feature Deadline!

We are currently collecting stories, remembrances, letters, photos and limericks in honor of former treasurer, long-time SWA member and dedicated supporter Harry Rubin.  Harry is struggling with health issues and we would like him know that SWA and our members love him and are thinking about him.

We plan to publish these tributes July 28-Aug 3. Please submit by July 24 and write TRIBUTE TO HARRY in your subject line.

If you have questions about subscribing to the blog or preparing a submission, email purple@southeasternwriters.org or use the contact us form above.

Thank you and ready, set, WRITE!
